The recording
We recorded O'Hare from the cell phone lot off Bessie Coleman Drive, in a white Fiat 500 Abarth with an airband antenna on the roof, from ten to five until a quarter past six on a hazy 81-degree Monday in August. The wind had gone around to the east that afternoon, so the airport was landing on the nines — arrivals came over the lot low enough to read the airline. Tower North on 126.9 and 128.15, Ground North on 124.125, departures on 126.625, and the metering frequency where pushed-back jets wait their turn. Every transmission on this album was on the air that afternoon; we cut and placed them by hand. Read the field notes →
